FIFA WORLD CUP 2010

Ohhhhhh how I love watching soccer, especially the World Cup and the EURO Cup. Soccer...or how we call it, Football, is a religion in Germany. We love our national team and are proud to cheer for them ever 4 years in the World Cup. If you are German, you are to own at least one national team jersey and you are to wear it during the games.

Mind you...I am in a mourning stage that has now lasted 3 days and will probably last longer than expected. I still don't understand why...ohhh why Germany played so horrible in this year's World Cup semifinal...after showing the world that we have so much potential and can beat great teams! Let's rewind...

To recap Germany's fantastic tournament career: Germany has won 3 times the Wold Cup and numerous times the Euro Cup, however, lately it was not meant to be. In 2006, Germany hosted the World Cup and that was also the year Craig and I met. We knew we were meant for each other when we started watching the cup together and as soon as I convinced Craig that Germany is THE team to root for...he became a Germany fan instantly...which he had to in order to make our relationship work...not really but that's what I told him haha.

In 2006, Germany also advanced to the semifinal and as you can guess choked to only finish 3rd. This was a very tragic event because Germany was the host nation and we all were hoping for a win! Many of you would now say...you came in third...that's an accomplishment...well not if you are German and have won the cup 3 times...not acceptable and yes we do expect a lot of our team...I am not gonna lie! Moving on to the next event, the Euro Cup in 2008. Well, guess what, Germany actually advanced into the finals but once again choked during the final game and gave Spain the title. SPAIN...sounds familiar..right?

Moving on to this year's World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Germany played well through it's group. There was a little hick up against Serbia but in the end they finished on top. Right of the bet Germany had big teams to play. They did not catch a break at all. In the round of 16 it was England, which is a great rival, yet they demolished them with a great performance to beat them 4:1. I loved it and felt like we really had a strong team this year. Germany moved on to the quarterfinal to face a very strong team with amazing individual players... ARGENTINA! Germany stayed humble and in the end it payed off...we beat them 4:0 with an amazing performance that nobody thought was possible. All critics thought Argentina would win but we have proven them wrong. Well, now the sad part...Germany moved onto the semifinal and had to face probably the best team in the world...SPAIN! Spain had a pretty easy walk through and had not played as many tough teams as Germany had...yet they also knew exactly what they had to do...they had to do what Germany did to Argentina...Spain had to shut down Germany. And well...so they did! Germany looked horrible and everything that was showcased by Germany in the previous 2 games of the tournament was missing. Germany played like they were afraid to win and pose a challenge to Spain. It was embarrassing to watch and Spain deserved to win. It's upsetting knowing that Germany has a superb team that is filled with young talent...yet for the 3rd time in the row Germany loses against Spain...a rival that has mastered to shut our team down. Germany is now playing for 3rd place again and I really really really really really hope that we will be able to advance to the final in 4 years when the FIFA World Cup is hosted by the all-time champion BRAZIL!

I am sad...very sad...I know it's just a game but it's not just a game in Germany. Football/Soccer is the greatest game ever and to call yourself world champion is THE greatest thing EVER! American's might not understand how anxious we wait for four years to get a chance to be the best...and once again it didn't happen! Nevertheless, I love the German Team...and yes it also has some hotties in it ;)

Finally, Germany has huge viewing parties in Berlin and all over different cities. When seeing them on TV I was reminded of how much I miss living there. I am eager to return at one point and I am happy my husband is looking forward to it as well...We will be cheering for Germany in Germany hopefully next time around! Cheers and GO NETHERLANDS!
